Foundation of preventive dental care includes routine 6 months recall exams, dental cleanings and application of fluoride and sealants. Once decay is formed, it involves drilling tooth structure to remove the decay so tooth could be filled. This loss of tooth structure can be easily prevented by Fluoride and sealant applications, deep cleanings, providing oral health care instructions and reinforcing home care routine. Routine recall exams help us identify any cavity and other conditions at an early stage before it progresses into a serious one. A cavity diagnosed at an early stage could be treated as a simple filling as opposed to root canal treatment/ crown / pulling it out at a later stage.
